The 2004 Vintage in Mildura, Victoria was a
challenging one, with the weather playing havoc with hail storms in
December 2003, damaging a number of vineyards in the region. The vineyard
that Farrell Estate Wines sources its fruit from was undamaged.
Mild weather was then prevalant for most of
January, which provided sensational ripening conditions, allowing the
fruit to ripen over a longer period, delaying the start of vintage yet
allowing flavours to develop without the effect of severe heat! Oops
spoke to soon - February proved to be a very challenging month, as Mildura
experienced a "heatwave" recording five consecutive days over
40 degrees celcius with little reprieve during the night.
Even though these conditions were challenging
and did affect a majority of the growers in the region, Farrell Estate
Wines had the added advantage of being able to select exactly what fruit
goes into their wine as all fruit is hand picked and hence only the
best quality fruit reaches the crusher and makes the wine for your family's
table.
Farrell Estate Wines total production was
1.9 tonnes, with 1.0 tonnes Cabernet Sauvignon and a combined weight
of 0.9 tonnes for Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot. This produced
approximately 1200L of wine. This wine is of excellent quality,
the initial cool ripening period, allowed the build up of anthocyanins
in the fruit, allowing wines of fantastic colour to be produced.
